Grey heron (Ardea cinerea) taking off from the reeds at an ornamental pond just outside Whitehaven, West Cumbria. The bird had just been looking for fish in the pond when he started stretching his wings. I took a series of photographs as it prepared to take off to try to capture the bird in flight. The photograph was taken in late winter before the reeds and irises had started to grow back, making it easier to see the heron.

I often stop by here to watch a pair of swans and their cygnets and quite frequently see the heron but it is difficult to photograph without disturbing it.
